Im Anschluss liest Autorin Barbi Marković einen Auszug aus ihrem Essay Zurück, zurück zu positiven Sachen – eine sehr persönliche Reflexion über ihre Reise nach Skopje und ihre Erfahrungen mit der Stadt in der heutigen Zeit.

Im Mittelpunkt der großangelegten internationalen Gruppenausstellung steht die bemerkenswerte Sammlung des Museums für Zeitgenössische Kunst (MoCA) Skopje. Nach dem schweren Erdbeben, das Skopje 1963 erschütterte, wurden in einer großen Geste internationaler Solidarität erhebliche Anstrengungen unternommen, um den Wiederaufbau der zerstörten Stadt zu unterstützen. Zentrales kulturelles Element der Rekonstruktion war die Gründung eines Museums für zeitgenössische Kunst und Künstler*innen aus aller Welt stifteten Skopje Tausende von Kunstwerken.
Wir haben vier Künstler*innen und ein Künstler*innenduo – Brook Andrew, Yane Calovski & Hristina Ivanoska, Siniša Ilić, Iman Issa und Gülsün Karamustafa – eingeladen, Werke aus der Sammlung auszuwählen und ein Display zu entwickeln, das ihren Blick auf die Skopje Solidarity Collection in ein sehr persönliches Verhältnis zu ihrer jeweils eigenen künstlerischen Praxis bringt. Elfie Semotan wurde eingeladen, die Stadtlandschaft Skopjes und das Museum festzuhalten. Autorin Barbi Marković hat ein Reisetagebuch über ihre Erfahrungen mit Skopje geschrieben.
Die Entstehungsgeschichte dieser ungewöhnlichen Sammlung und ihr historischer sowie politischer Kontext werden in einem eigenen Bereich mit Archivmaterial und Leihgaben des Stadtmuseums von Skopje gezeigt.

Barbi Marković will read a segment of her essay Back, back to positive things – a deeply personal reflection on her trip to Skopje and experience of the city in the present day.

This comprehensive, international group exhibition focuses on the remarkable collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) Skopje. After the massive earthquake that hit Skopje in 1963, there was a huge effort to help rebuild the devastated city, as a large-scale gesture of international solidarity. The decision was made to establish a museum of contemporary art as a key cultural element of the reconstruction, and thousands of works were donated to Skopje by artists from around the world.
We invited four artists and one artist duo – Brook Andrew, Yane Calovski & Hristina lvanoska, Siniša Ilić, Iman lssa, and Gülsün Karamustafa – to select works from the collection and to add their own contemporary works, bringing their vision of MoCA’s collection into intimate relation with their respective artistic practices. Elfie Semotan was invited to photograph the cityscape of Skopje and the museum, and writer Barbi Marković contributed a travelogue of her experience of Skopje.
The genesis of this unusual collection as well as the historical and political context are presented in a separate section with archive material and loans from the City Museum of Skopje.
